Haiti has left the minds of many people since the earthquakes that occurred in January. However, NGO's like The Haiti Motorcycle Project are still plugging away, trying to bring relief to a country that is as devastated as it was four months ago. A woman that I work with at the Colby College Museum of Art, Patricia, has been traveling to Haiti over the past few months to help run the project and was able to tell me a little bit about it. In a different area of Haiti, a friend of Patricia's runs another NGO that helps Haitian's make a living through goat farming. However, due to the urgency of the situation surrounding Port-au-Prince, a new idea to help Haitians was created. Because the roads that bring aid to the city are extremely congested, motorcycles are the quickest way to get supplies into the city. The Haiti Motorcycle Project helps to bring supplies into the city by motorcycle, but more importantly, hires Haitians to drive the motorcycles themselves. This project allows Haitians to participate in their own relief process as well as provide for themselves and their families during this tragedy.
Visit The Haiti Motorcycle Project for more information or to sponsor a Haitian motorcycle driver yourself.
